67.jpgThe Academy of Art University showcased seven recent graduates from their Fashion, Textile and Knitwear design departments. It is extremely refreshing to see exploration in fashion and intense talent in the 20’s age bracket. Collectively Marina Nikolaeva Popska, Kara Sennett, Amanda Cleary, Richelle Valenzuela, Brittney Major, Kie Pan and Sawanya Jomthepmala presented a show that celebrated the future talent of fashion. While some of the designers aesthetically didn’t move me or proposed things that have been seen (Valenzuela channeling Project Runway winner Leanne’s wave technique) the workmanship and attention to detail was impeccable and undoubtedly inspiring. The standout of the show proved to be Thailand born Designer Sawanya Jomtheplmala, who showed last in the rotation. Inspired by traditional glass mosaics seen in Thai Buddhist temples, she took a tailoring cue from the 40’s and 50’s. Her hints of origami-like details (which were huge a few seasons ago) did not seem dated; it felt more like a revival and push forward. All in all many of this seasons collections have been victims to sponsors (Hello Swarovski!), held hostage to the recession or just plain boring, leave it to college students to make the difference.—J.
