Livin’ For The City    03.06.2008

The last half of the 20th Century saw an influx of urban nomads, migrants from the suburbs or places far, far away who uprooted and replanted themselves in the world’s metropolises, intent to change the way they live. So it went for British painter Melanie Smith, who moved to Mexico City, the world’s third largest megalopolis, in 1989. In her paintings, Smith reveals how the migration and development unfold and converge in Parres, a small town within Mexico City. Collaborating with filmmaker Rafael Ortega, with whom she has worked since 1997, Smith created Parres Trilogy, which has its U.S. debut at the Miami Art Museum this week.

Parres Trilogy, based on the concepts of sight and obscurity, captures a scene that is either hidden or uncovered by one of Smith’s paintings. According to the Tate Britain, which first exhibited Parres Trilogy last year, the exhibit “crystallizes the artist’s concerns with the city - the defining setting of contemporary life - and our shared attempts to make sense of the world around us.”

Exhibit runs March 6 - June 29
