Abstract State Of Mind
Featuring drawings from MoMA’s collection, Stage Pictures: Drawing for Performance investigates the work that results when artists design for theater, dance, and opera. The exhibition highlights set and costume studies, as well as more abstract suggestions of light and mood, from the total theaters of the Ballets Russes and the Bauhaus, to Lincoln Kirstein’s formation of the New York City Ballet, to Pop performances and contemporary epic opera. The works, spanning a century of visual experimentation on the stage, demonstrate how artists have used drawing strategies to interpret texts, create dramatic mises-en-scène, imagine bodies in space and motion, and manipulate illumination and shadow. Works on paper by Fernand Léger, Sonia Delaunay-Terk, Marc Chagall, Diego Rivera, Jim Dine and others reveal the generative role of performance for visual art. Organized by Jodi Hauptman, Curator, Department of Drawings.
Exhibition runs until August 25, 2009

TRACE READS

Edwidge Danticat’s “Breath. Eyes. Memory,” is a compelling tale that taps into the life of Sophie, a young Haitian girl born into a life of poverty. Rich in spirit and love from her aunt, Sophie’s world is ripped to pieces when she’s forced to relocate to New York with her estranged mother. Although her move to the states promises a better life, conflict arises and Sophie strays from the path of “success”. Marriage and a consequent pregnancy find her back in her native country. Her heart-wrenching journey reveals the burdens and shameful secrets carried by the women in her family, and the skeletons of her mother are more apparent then thought.

The Re-Emergence of The Femcee
It seems every millisecond someone’s homeboy is dropping a mix-tape. A guaranteed 99.99% of those “dope” releases will be lost in the crypt of wanna-be-rappers too whack to be considered for anything else but a coaster…or skeet-shooting.
Surprisingly a female emcee by the name of RA the MC is proving herself to be a part of that .01% that is focused on changing the game one mix at a time. “Are You Not Entertained?” her latest mix-tape effort is an eclectic mix of tracks that exercises her way with words. She shines brilliantly on tracks such as “We Suffer“ with Theophilus London and “Let’s Talk About It” featuring Fresh Daily. She continues flexing her lyrical muscles on “Tight Mouth Rap“, and “Brenda“ that recalls the Tupac classic, “Brenda’s Got A Baby.”
With Lil’ Kim dancing with the stars and Remy Ma serving a stint in the pen, finding a “femcee” that can write her own rhymes is as hard as pin-pointing the whereabouts of Queen Pen. Ra is a much needed addition to the game and definitely worth a listen. You’ll have to place your glass of Cîroc on the table, no coaster here.
