SOLE II SOLE: Nicholas Kirkwood
London born Shoe Designer Nicholas Kirkwood,28 needs no introduction, nor accompanying words. But for those who have managed to dwell under a rock, Kirkwood has been dubbed “The Next Louboutin” . He has collaborated with the likes of Phillip Lim, Rodarte, Chloe and is now the creative director for Pollini. Although one could go on about the wonders of his work, the Fall 2009 collection speaks for itself. A Sole II Sole Fall Preview:
MJ’s BDay
Michael Jackson’s birthday bash today!
The Spike Lee organised event will now take place in Prospect Park, big enough to squeeze in the ten thousand well wishers expected to attend despite the wet weather.
From noon to 5pm, expect Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz and the Rev. Al Sharpton, who delivered the memorable eulogy at the funeral over a month ago.
No prizes for guessing the soundtrack.

SOLE II SOLE: Lanvin F.09
(Paris) Lanvin’s Fall 2009 shoe collection is a successful mix of “couture and jogging,” according to menswear director Lucas Ossendrijver. This season offers classic footwear silhouettes re-imagined in flannel, calf skin and velvet. Aside from the smart shoe options, in recent years the Parisian label has become synonymous with producing wonderfully designed trainers—that are seen on the feet Jay-Z, Kanye West and Usher. While the price points might not be for the frugal man, these shoes will be go-to options season after season. —J. Dwayne Joseph
The Mind Of Mustafa
In all of our lives we come into contact with those we view as individuals who are ahead of their time. I’ve known Melo X for quite some time (he was TRACE Magazine’s Black Girls Rule Party DJ for 2008); during this time he has grown each day as a Producer, DJ, Innovator and a Figure of our Modern Time!
With his Web Documentary “The Mind Of Mustafa” — We get to know more about this complexly creative individual.
Enjoy!

London calling to a faraway town as the Big Smoke sets up shop in the Big Apple.
30 independent pop-up boutiques from the Newburgh Quarter in Central London will be colonising Orchard Street from August 20th to September 13th ready to celebrate all things currently cutting the mustard in London town.
At the heart of the takeover: 186 Orchard Street as The Wish You Were Here Pop-up Shop takes up residence in a vacant storefront. Showcasing fashion, accessory and other lifestyle products, the guerrilla shopping centre houses retail refugees including Sienna Miller’s clothing venture Twenty8Twelve, vintage goldmine The Face and Mod staple Fred Perry. The cream of London’s sartorial crop strut their stuff on August 29th at a fashion show in the unlikely locale of Broome’s municipal parking lot.
On top of posh frocks, music and food are also on the menu. Whether a bacon buttie or a quick cuppa tickles your fancy, local restaurants will be offering free food samples. London DJs get set for a right royal bender and store discounts will help you part with your dosh.

More than a fortnight of the best in food, fashion and music Her Majesty’s loyal subjects have to offer will culminate on September 13th. Orchard Street will close for the all day - and rather snappily titled - God Save the Queen Wish You Were Here LES Wrap Party. The Lower East Side will then embark on the second leg of the foreign exchange, jetting over to Blighty in October. Mind the gap indeed.
On Orchard Street, it’s like 1776 never happened. God bless Her Majesty – the British are coming.
A Quick Glossary:
Big Smoke: London
To cut the mustard: To achieve the required standard
Posh frock: Your best dress
Buttie: A roll

SOLE II SOLE: Raphael Young

After a notable Spring 2009 collection inspired by Japanese Samurai, Parisian based footwear designer Raphael Young is once again raising eyebrows and peaking interest with those mesmerized by his innovative, sculptural and extreme architectural designs. Young’s Fall 2009 effort is one part David Bowie a la 1972’s Ziggy Stardust Tour and two parts provocative.
Purple Rain Sing-A-Long.
Come on August 6 @ 7:30 pm to Prospect Park Band Shell (9th Street and Prospect Park West Park Slope, NY) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of history’s greatest pop albums, and the extravagatly, hilariously whacky and over the top film it inspired (the apotheosis of both the purple one’s genius and self caricature), we invite you to don something lacey and ruffled and come get your Prince on.
We’ll have lyric subtitles, but you know the words already. Joy Dragland of Brooklyn’s live disco orchestra Escort certainly does; Purple Rain was the first cassette she ever owned.
Dragland and others from Escort will lead the sing-along, after the band puts everyone in the mood with an opening set.
(Note: The film is Rated R and admission of anyone under 17 will require an accompanying parent or guardian. The whole evening will feature scenes of extreme sexiness throughout.)
