Alert! New Designer: Ryan Noon’s A/W collection rocks!

Having sharpened his teeth at Alexander McQueen, Nike and Henrik Vibskov, young UK-based designer Ryan Noon is now venturing out on his ownsome. The launch of his A/W collection at hip east London hangout Jaguar Shoes was an opportunity to fill the room with all of his favourite things - including a set of the most promising people working in UK fashion today. The young designer certainly didn’t stint on the tribal patterns, animal prints and hallucinogenic dancing.

Fashion designer moonlighting as an installation artist, Ryan Noon moved over from the US in 2002 in London to attend Central St Martins and to be closer to his beloved Scandinavia. He’s a keen walker, hiker, flier over glaciers and self-confessed talker to animals.
Noon’s T Shirts, sweatshirts and accessories are currently stocked in boutiques in Soho, Notting Hill and Hoxton but you can buy online at www.ryannoon.com. His sharp prints and eye for detail means that one doesn’t need to be suited and booted to look dapper.

Gettin’ Funked Up: Dam-Funk with Master Blazter + Peanut Butter Wolf
This past Wednesday, at the Bowery Ballroom, New York City was assembled to witness a close encounter of the funk. Cali’s own proprietor of the modern-funk movement, Dam-Funk, was set to invade the city, livening up the funkmosphere. Highly renowned turntablist DJ Spinna provided a few rounds of calisthenics to get the crowd warmed up, via classic boogie and funk joints. Once the crowd had been worked into a light perspiration, Spinna made room for the surprise guest of the night…musical luminary and founder of Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf. With the assistance of wingman CX Kidtronik, Mr. Wolf went all audio-visual on us with a montage of rare and familiar treats from his archives, all synched up with a corresponding video installation! Highlights of the set included rare Soul Train footage of a Janet Jackson performance, Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World” outtake footage, and a video tribute to the ailing Guru of Gang Starr complete with rare interview clips. All in all, Spinna and Peanut Butter Wolf provided a seamless introduction to the star of the evening, Dam-Funk. For the first time in NYC, the maestro of funk was flanked by his new band members (synth-bass keyboardist Computer Jay, boom-bap drummer J1, and percussionist GroWeyez) to form his Master Blazter outfit. The addition of new live instrumentation, combined with his signature keytar, vocoder, and recorded tracks brought new dimensions to an already powerful sound and an airtight set. With total command of his audience, Dam kept the cosmic energy in high concentration throughout the crowd. Heavy doses of funk were administered from the beginning notes of the set to the final riff of the encore. With a packed house (I even spotted the faces of legendary DJ Stretch Armstrong , Lady Miss Kier of 90’s club-dance group Deee-Lite, and renowned producer Waajeed of Platinum Pied Pipers/Bling 47), the evidence is clear that Dam-Funk is building up a legion of willing followers. You might wanna get involved…throw ya’ funk signs in the air!

Whitney Biennial 2010: Rashaad Newsome Performance
According to Rashaad Newsom, his exhibit called Five which is to be shown during the Whitney Biennial 2010 deals with this growing phenomenon:
“Five is a multimedia performance that redefines how performance art is chronicled beyond the traditional mediums of video and photography. At the same time, Five serves as a platform to help voguing transcend its marginalization and be seen as a legitimate art form. Using custom-made interactive sound and video manipulation technologies, set to live vocals and an improvisational score Newsome creates a line drawing from the five dance elements of voguing.”
