Apparel legend Lacoste has joined creative forces with Leah McSweeney’s streetwear brand Married to the MOB to create a lace covered sneaker that is charmingly sassy. Available in purple and gold color ways this hi-top sneaker brings a certain edge to the Lacoste footwear offering that will attract a new (Read: Downtown) female audience. “I have been wanting to work with lace for a while but was waiting for the right product. Once I saw the silhouette of the LACOSTE sneaker I knew the lace idea would work perfectly for this”, McSweeney explains.  Intrigued yet? Both sneakers will be released Valentine’s Day week (the 13th to be exact) and will be available on the MOB website www.mttmnyc.com , hand-picked specialty stores worldwide including Colette in Paris and select LACOSTE flagship locations stateside. Retail: $120.00.  The Verdict:  Not since Jeremy Scott and Adidas has a pairing appeared so “odd”, but proved to be kismet. Follow your sole and take a vow to get these shoes!

Curtis Santiago is a breath of fresh air - the kind of creative visionary who steps onto the scene and revolutionizes the game rather effortlessly. You’ve probably heard his name bouncing off the lips of those kids who are always two-steps ahead when it comes to music, fashion, film and art. That’s because Canadian born-and-raised Santiago has made a name for himself in every field – he was a member of the Hi-Phoniqs soul band in the late 90s, has co-hosted CTV’s Fashion Television, has exhibited his colorful, “wild-style” paintings in galleries across the country, made his acting debut in a John Cusak film that recently wrapped in Toronto, and is now set to host the highly-anticipated RedBull 3Style DJ Tour. His music is as post-genre as he is, fusing slick rhymes with soulful rock. Santiago released his latest mixtape with Mick Boogie, “HAVE MERCY!” last April, featuring a collaboration with TRACE favorite Mickey Factz on a remix of The Killers hit track “Human”. TRACE sat down with Santiago to gain a little more insight into his eclectic music, personal style and future projects. Read more

PUMA, the global athletic and lifestyle brand, has teamed up with artist Kehinde Wiley, the internationally acclaimed, half-Nigerian American-born painter, for a creative project in anticipation of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In June of 2009, Wiley journeyed to Cameroon, Ghana, and Côte D’Ivoire to collaborate with three of Africa’s most prominent football players, Samuel Eto’o, John Mensah and Emmanuel Eboué, in order to create a series of four original artworks featuring the players.

The following clip is the story of how PUMA was able to connect a fine artist with three prominent athletes in their home countries, through a dialogue of art, sport, and culture.

Rare chess sets arrive in New York

Alexander Gelman, a New York media artist currently based in Tokyo, designed limited edition chess sets based on different philosophies of fine Japanese arts and crafts made out of lacquer, silver plating and gold leaf.

While working and traveling in Japan, Gelman became fascinated by the greatly respected Japanese traditions of legendary sword making culture and art.

Traditional Japanese sword craft can be traced back to five provinces where each had its own school, traditions and “trademarks”.

Gelman spent time learning about the detailed crafts, which later gave birth to the idea of bringing the sensibility of Japanese crafts to major metropolises. He decided to collaborate with traditional Japanese craftsman in order to design chess sets that would be relevant to the ancient tradition and represent the substance of Samurai culture in Japan.

Limited versions of the handcrafted chess sets, which take 10 months to create each, have been gaining interest among fans and collectors alike.

The chess sets are on display at the Fellissimo Design House in Manhattan, and will be available on request only at a price ranging from 80,000 to $123,600 USD.

Gelman also created a one-of-kind, custom, lacquer bicycle, which will also be on display at Felissimo in NYC.

With the economy out of whack, gift giving this holiday season should focus on giving the gift of exclusivity and items that are special. Diptyque’s Holiday 2009 Benjoin candle is the perfect gift for the guy who takes pride in all aspects of his environment. This “mandle”  is encased by purple glass adorned with Wycinanki paper cut decoration, a Polish folk art passed down for generations by shepherds. If you love a great balsamic-resinous note of benzoin, this might be your moment. ($68.00, Available at Diptyque 377 Bleeker; NYC. T: 212.242.2333)—J. Dwayne Joseph
